The Sci Fi channel in the UK has announced the free availability of two online games - DarkOrbit and Seafight - to users of scifi.co.uk. The website was re-launched in May 2008 to offer users sci-fi and fantasy content, online gaming and gadgets. DarkOrbit and Seafight are provided by German-based Bigpoint, a developer of browser-based games. The games are multiple player games played directly in a browser without downloads or installation of additional software.
In DarkOrbit, the player becomes an elite space pilot on 3D ships, to conquer new sectors in foreign galaxies and work their way up in the company. Playing with other participants in real-time, players will have a chance to win $10,000.
Seafight is all about wars on the high-seas for gaining freedom, fame and fortune. This game is played live against real opponents, with a chance to win a jackpot of $10,000.
The games are said to have about 30 million gamers around the world. Players can buy virtual goods or use special game features on scifi.co.uk with a premium subscription.
Kevin Obi, senior vice president for new digital media business at NBC Universal, said: “Sci Fi is our umbrella brand for casual and online gaming in the UK and other countries outside the USA. Science fiction and fantasy fans have a huge affinity with gaming and our relationship with Bigpoint will allow us to take advantage of growing popularity of multiple players.”
Heiko Hubertz, founder and CEO of Bigpoint, said: “We're pleased that we're working with Sci Fi UK on our first collaboration following our agreement with NBC Universal in June."
Peacock Equity Fund, a $250m venture capital fund launched by NBC Universal along with sister company GE Commercial Finance, acquired 35% of Bigpoint in a 70m euro ($110m) deal in June 2008.
