Reviews: F ROM TIME TO TIME
Hopscotch, PG, 98 minutes: AN adolescent boy (Alex Etel) interacts with ghosts from his family’s tragic history when he’s sent to stay with his very proper grandmother at her old manor house in the countryside. The year is 1944 and the inquisitive 13-year-old sets about solving a family mystery as he waits for word on his father, who has been reported missing in the war.
Maggie Smith (from TV’s Downton Abbey) plays the prim granny, with Pauline Collins (Shirley Valentine), Timothy Spall (Secrets & Lies) and Dominic West (The Wire) co-starring. This old-fashioned but warm-hearted children’s film was adapted by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park) from Lucy M. Boston’s classic classic six-book Green Knowe series. Fellowes also directs.
You may recognise Etel from the 2004 Irish charmer Millions (directed by Danny Boyle before he did Slumdog Millionaire), the 2007 fantasy Water Horse or the TV mini-series Cranford.
