Free commercial fonts - 5 great resources

Posted in : Free Fonts

(added few months ago!)

Free commercial fonts - 5 great resourcesBored of using the same, dull fonts that come as standard with your operating system?

The chances are, your users are bored of them too! Typography is one of the most important ways in which you can pique a viewer’s interest in your website or other marketing materials – and yet many businesses ignore it, often because they presume that good fonts are too expensive.

But, while it is perfectly possible to spend hundreds of pounds on fonts, there is a wealth of high quality free alternatives available on the web. If you are looking for great free fonts, try some of the following resources.

1. The League of Moveable Type
A beautifully designed, straightforward site, The League of Moveable Type is dedicated to free, open source fonts. There are relatively few fonts on offer so far, but the site is growing all the time. Best of all, the fonts are ready for @font-face – meaning that you can use them on your website easily.

2. Font Squirrel
Font Squirrel boasts almost 700 font families, all of which are free for commercial use. You can search by popularity or by style, and you can also generate your own @font-face kits within the website.

3. DaFont
It might not look as pretty as its competitors, but DaFont still has a gret collection of fonts – many of which you won’t find anywhere else. Be careful, though, as not all of the fonts here are cleared for commercial use.

4. FontStock
FontStock specialises in free TrueType fonts. The site also gives you the opportunity to test the fonts inline, rather than having to download them to your computer first. Again, make sure you read the licence, as they do not all permit commercial use.

5. MyFonts
MyFonts claims to be the world’s largest collection of fonts and, while we can’t vouch for the accuracy of that claim, there is certainly a lot there! Not all of the fonts here are free, but the site allows you to search by licence in order to find what you need.

Nintendo announces two more free games for early 3DS buyers

Posted in : Free Games

(added few months ago!)

Nintendo’s mea culpa to the people that bought the Nintendo 3DS at the original asking price continues. The maker of the Nintendo DS—the best-selling handheld video game system of all-time—were surprised when they discovered that its new system was doing poorly. Even though it had 3D! The lack of solid games was the most oft cited reason, and the dominant position of the DS made it tough to get people excited about the new 3DS. It also didn’t help that several of the features Nintendo had been touting for the new hardware, including Netflix, the Nintendo e-Shop and a web browser, weren’t available yet and no firm date of release dates were given. As far as product launches go, it was made of fail.

And then there was the price. $249.99 is a fairly reasonable price for a device that can do everything the 3DS claims it can do, but if there are no good games and some of the best features weren’t even out yet, that price tag becomes a bit harder to swallow. It also probably didn’t help much that Sony sort of kicked sand in Nintendo’s face by introducing the ridiculously more powerful and wi-fi friendly PlayStation Vita at a $249.99 price ($299.99 with 3G).

Not surprisingly the handheld did not sell well, and only 830,000 people have purchased the 3DS since launch. That number is a wee bit disappointing when compared with the Nintendo DS, which sold 144.6 million units as of December 2010, and a wee bit short of its projected sales of 16 million units in the first year.

So in response, Nintendo decided to try to win back the public buzz by significantly lowering the price of the 3DS to $170 as of August 12. But what about all the poor suckers that bought their supposedly fantastic and game-changing device (no pun intended) before that?

Before 830,000 began to wonder if they had been had, Nintendo decided to do what it could to appease them. Last week, the publisher/manufacturer/developer announced that it would be giving its loyal fans 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo NES and Game Boy Advance library. Ten of those games were already announced, including five NES titles The Legend of Zelda, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Ice Climber and Super Mario Bros., and five GBA games including Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame.

Nintendo claimed that the rest would be announced in the coming weeks, and the company appears to be good for it as two more of the titles have been announced via the website GamesRadar: Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and the mouthful of a title Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario 3 (which is a remake of the classic NES game, Super Mario Bros. 3). More titles will be announced in the coming weeks.

The free downloadable games is a good move from Nintendo, who have to know that the launch of the 3DS was muffed. There are several big name titles due out later this year, but the people that shelled out $249.99 for an incomplete and somewhat rushed product were left with a red face and figurative cartoon-like steam coming from their ears when their product loyalty and excitement for the 3DS was rewarded by paying $80 more and receiving substantially less than people buying it just a few months later. It also most be on Nintendo’s mind that with the with the Wii U coming next year, the company cannot afford to risk alienating some of their most loyal fans.

The 10 downloadable games from the NES library will be available on September 1 for early 3DS owners, and the titles will all be available to purchase for everyone shortly after. The 10 GBA games will be available by the end of the year.

Trail ride earns Scouts free game tokens at Scheels

Posted in : Free Games

(added few months ago!)

More than 20 children with Cub Scout Pack 79 of Chatham rode the bicycle trail from the Chatham Post Office to Scheels Sunday, July 31, 2011, to earn a year-star achievement award for participating in summer programs.

Scheels donated ferris wheel rides and game tokens to the Cub Scouts said Jeff Randall, community chair for Pack 79. “Amy Beadle, event coordinator for Scheels, was very helpful. The store provided us with water and gave us a place to cool down,” Randall said.

10-year-olds Austin Upchurch and Luke Boehler said the bicycle ride was tiring, but it led them to a shooting gallery, where they both earned a score of 150. “It was exhausting, but it was fun,” said Boehler. “The heat was bad. It was hard going up hill, but it was really fast down hill.”

“When we got here, we got pretty good scores in the shooting. Then we looked at the guns and the fishing rods,” Boehler added. The six-and-a-half mile trail ride started two years ago by former chairman of Pack 79, Lynn Bale, and cub master Rob Rapp.

“I’m an independent rider,” Bale said. “I enjoy the time alone in the saddle and it’s a good event for the kids.”Scouts can earn a year-star achievement award during the summer if they complete three of five summer activities, which also include bowling at Strike ‘N Spare in August and a campout at Henson Robinson Zoo in September.

Activities that have already been held were a swimming outing and dinner at Island Bay Yacht Club and a Memorial Day flag placement ceremony at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Bob Croteau of Springfield, who participated in the ride with his sons, Ryan, 10, and Rene’ “Regie”, 9, said his family was going to make the ride back home as well. “We didn’t have to burn an carbon to get here,” Croteau said. “We’ll be riding home to Iron Bridge Road, too.”“We ride our bikes to Chatham for lunch a lot. It’s a good way to burn off extra energy.”Boy Scout troops 310 and 97 were liaisons for the summer activity.

Randall said the troop has a good backing of parental support for events like the trail ride, including the 10 adults that were on-hand to assist the Scouts that day. “We have a great group. No matter what den you’re in, we are a family. We can always depend on the den leaders and the parents.”

Free 3DS games named as Nintendo shares tumble 21%

Posted in : Free Games

(added few months ago!)

In case you missed the news yesterday Nintendo are planning to cut the price of the 3DS portable console by around a third all across the world. According to EU regulations they're not allowed to set a price themselves but analysts are now predicting between £150 and £155 in the UK.
As we warned before there's likely to be a lot of variation in the price between different stores, with the price cut due to come into effect on 12th August. But if you buy and register a 3DS before that you'll be entitled to download 10 free NES games and 10 free Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games from the Virtual Console.

This is part of the new 'Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors' scheme, which you can find more details on at Nintendo UK's official website. The NES games will be available from 1st September and will include Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda.
These will be available to ambassadors before they're released as paid-for titles, and if there's any change to them between now and when they go live for everyone else you'll still get the updated versions for free.

The Game Boy Advance titles are promised only before the end of 2011 and include the likes of Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, so again you're not being fobbed off with any old rubbish.

Nintendo are also insisting that they currently have 'no plans' to make the 10 Game Boy Advance games available to the general public now or in the future.

Most seem to agree this is actually pretty generous, but the financial markets have not reacted well to Nintendo's drastic measures. Nintendo's share price dropped 21 per cent yesterday, although that was more because of their financial results than anything else.

For the first time in the company's history they made a loss over the last three months - thanks to marketing costs (and a lack of sales) for the 3DS, falling sales of the DS and Wii, and the research & development costs of the imminent Wii U.

As a result former president Hiroshi Yamauchi saw half a billion dollars wiped off the value of his 10 per cent share in the company. Some reports even suggest that boss Satoru Iwata has taken a 50 per cent pay cut to appease investors, with other execs seeing their salaries reduced by 30 per cent and their bonuses reduced.

Although they'll likely never confirm it Nintendo are now thought to be making a loss on every 3DS sold, something they never usually do. If 3DS sells pick up this Christmas, and with a solid line-up of games on the way there's every reason to suspect they will, then all this will have been worth it. But if not, well… we wouldn't like to contemplate…

Daily Free Games at Bingo Lottery

Posted in : Free Games

(added few months ago!)

Bingo Lottery have a new offer for their players, access to two new rooms and each offer free bingo games! It was purely by chance that we stumbled upon the new additions to the site and although not quite as impressive as some of the freebies on offer around the world of internet bingo, the daily free games at Bingo Lottery are definitely a bonus for the sites players. One of the two rooms is open to all players, deposited or not, whilst the other is reserved for players who have funded their account.

To access the free rooms at Bingo Lottery you simply have to login in to your account and visit the lobby. The no cost games can be found under the "Free Bingo" (as you would expect) and the schedule is as follows:

Free Bingo Funded - this room is open to depositing players only and is available from 3pm until 6.45pm. Games play every 15 minutes in this Bingo Lottery room and jackpots are £10 each and every game
Free Bingo All - this room is open to all players as the name suggests. It opens at 7am and closes at 7pm with a game every 8 minutes. All games in this room have prizes of £1

Of course Bingo Lottery isn't the only site to have these rooms available, you will find them at all sites on the Dragonfish network but we do have to ask, is this enough? To be honest whilst we are impressed that there is now more "free" stuff being offered by this and many other sites, there are rumours that the current £1 free bonus for registering with your financial details is set to end soon and the free bingo games are a replacement for the sign-up offer!

Printable coupons are widely available today online. Each year, as internet presence grows, more and more consumers are taking advantage of online printable coupons to save money at their local groceries, restaurants, and favorite retailers. An increasing number of retailers is using printable coupons as a way to meet the needs of today's consumers by better serving their customers and promoting sales.

Printable coupons make sense for brands, retailers, and consumers by taking advantage of new online technologies that can deliver coupons daily to targeted consumers at a fraction of the cost of that of traditional offline print coupons. In addition, new technologies make printable coupons simple and safe, decrease fraud, and help providers track coupon usage back to the campaign and individual level. These new technologies target consumers by geographic location and interest and have increased redemption values dramatically, benefiting consumer, merchant, and manufacturer.

Large traditional coupon providers have, over the past few years, made it easy for manufacturers and retailers to setup online printable coupons and easy for merchants to redeem them. And websites like MySavings.com make it easy for consumers to access and print to these free printable coupons from any computer connected to the internet.

Over the past ten years, printable grocery coupons have been becoming popular as an easy way for most consumers to save money. Today, consumers can easily find and print grocery coupons for their favorite brand name products and local stores that they frequent. In addition to helping consumers save on their favorite products, discount grocery coupons also encourage them to try new products and brands while saving money.

Though online grocery coupons are not accepted in every store, most major retailers and chains now accept printable grocery coupons, such as Wal-Mart, Publix, Albertsons, Safeway, Kroger, Whole Foods, Target and Winn-Dixie. Many times, a store's refusal to accept printable grocery coupons is just a matter of a clerk or local store not being aware of corporate policy to accept them, which is often remedied by contacting the stores management or corporate headquarters.

Coupon portals like MySavings.com offer a large variety of online coupons, including hundreds of printable grocery coupons. Local retailers, grocerers, and companies also often feature their brands printable grocery coupons on their web sites for their customers to take advantage of.

Today's internet consumers are always looking for a deal and online coupons are more popular than ever. There are over a million searches for coupons on google.com alone each month. A simple search returns results for thousands of online coupons: everything from printable coupons to online coupon codes for discounts and free shipping.

Deals and coupons are often scattered across the internet, lurking among pages of search results and in old forum and blog posts. Coupon sites, comparison shopping engines, auction sites, and large retailers provide ways for users to compare products, reviews, and prices to find the best deals. And large coupon portals like MySavings.com bring together the different varieties of online coupons and organize them in a way that makes it easier for users by dividing coupons into sections for printable grocery coupons, online coupon codes and links, restaurant coupons, and local retail coupons and deals.

With more and more consumers turning to the internet to do their shopping it only makes sense that retailers and manufacturers shift their focus from traditional print coupon promotions to online coupons that can be directly marketed to those consumers interested in their products and services. Coupon codes are promotional keys that retailers provide to shoppers to take advantage of a particular promotional offering. For example, an online store offers their return customers free shipping on their next order if they type in FREESHIP2 in the discount code box at checkout. Coupon codes are not just limited to free shipping coupons, but also include discount coupon codes, two-for-one offers, free samples, rebates, and any nearly every other deal that an online retailer can offer.

Unlike traditional printable coupons that are offered by manufacturers and redeemable at all stores that carry their products, coupon codes are generally offered from a particular retailer for shopping done exclusively at their store. Manufacturer coupons persuade consumers to purchase a particular brand or product, while coupon codes encourage consumers to shop at a particular online retailer. For those who prefer to shop at particular online retailer or are just shopping around at various online retailers, coupon codes are a great way to save money shopping online.

Through websites such as MySavings.com, online shoppers can search for online coupon codes by category or by retailer. And if a consumer knows what and where they want to buy something, a quick search for a coupon code for that store may end up getting them 10% off or free shipping on their order.

Now, on coupon portal websites such as MySavings.com, consumers have access to wide varieties of free discount coupons that come from various coupon sources - from printable grocery coupons, to online coupon codes and discount links and local service and restaurant coupons. Free Games For The Young

Posted in : Free Games

(added few months ago!)

However free games available on the internet now come in a great variety appropriate for young children of all ages, from toddlers to preschoolers, school age children and teens. Parents can also indulge and have lots of fun playing free online games with their children.

Type of Games: Free games on the internet tend to be based around age groups and game types. For toddlers there are games involving colors, shapes and interactive free games that work on their co-ordination. There are also active games that get them working on their hand-eye co-ordination as well as games involving animals which always get them interested.

For preschoolers, free online games might involve active animation / cartoon figures and interactive, online puzzle games to help these kids grasp concepts of language, math, music and social behavior e.g. right and wrong. Games involve crafts – i.e. art and building basic stuff are also popular in this age group.

For school age children, games will have increase complexity and may include online puzzle games, games involving math, music, language / word comprehension, spelling and vocabulary related free games.

For old children in their teens, brain teasers, Sudoku and other number games, language games, complex puzzle games, reasoning games bring bit more challenges for their inquisitive minds. Teenage children might also start getting into animation and video games involve problem solving, virtual reality adventures and other active games.

For all age groups, free online games come under some of these basic categories:

1.    Co-ordination, online puzzle games which test hand-eye and brain co-ordination skills
2.    Craft games which indulge children in art and craft making
3.    Free puzzle games which include jig saw puzzles, mazes and word puzzles
4.    Music games which involve tunes, music instruments and singing
5.    Math games including word and number games related to mathematics
6.    Problem solving games which indulge gamers to solve presented problems through skill and learning
7.    Word/language related games may include scrabble, spelling and vocabulary games
8.    Picture / coloring games which are for younger children helping to develop association with color, photos and pictures.
9.    Adventure/simulation games include animated and active adventuring learning games that tend to be longer, interactive and simulate real life challenges or adventures.
10.    Intuition / reasoning games which may include brain teasers and mind development games
11.    Physical activities which are online games that get gamers to carry out physical tasks and activities

Many of these online games are played on the computer through keyboard, mouse, touch and voice commands. There are also many popular free online games that are printable so can be downloaded and printed on paper to be played away from the computer.

Benefit of Free Games
Free online games for the young offers many benefits:

-    Developing language skills in young brains as young minds learn sounds, pronunciation and phonics much easier than older brains
-    Increase hand-eye co-ordination with games that involve activities
-    Help young gamers learn concepts such as language, music, colors, math and social behavior through a fun process. Younger gamers learn faster when they enjoy the process
-    Provides release for young children to have fun in a non-pressure environment to remove tensions and reduce hyperactivity
-    Build attention span and ability to focus in young kids
-    Develop essential math and spelling, vocabulary skills from an early age
-    Encourage artistic endeavor and craft appreciation in children so that this is carried through their lives.
-    Build confidence/ self esteem as young gamers succeed and get good at things
-    Increase creativity, intuition and life skills
-    Improve vital problem solving skills for school, work and life
-    Add to young children’s life knowledge base

As young minds and bodies are developing, giving them mental and physical stimulation through games is vital to develop neuron networks in their brains. This early neuron network development helps boost learning and problems solving ability later in life.

As with all good things, access to free online games and free online puzzles should be limited so that young kids are not ‘overloaded’ with information and do not become addicted to free games and miss out on important physical exercise as well as beneficial physical social interaction with other children.

Importantly, parents should be involved with their children when playing these free online games to develop fun competition and boost family interaction and social dynamics. This will lead to a happier and more fulfilling family life for children and adults alike.
