As many of you know, I tend to be on the more conservative edge of technology and not the leading edge, or should I say bleeding edge. Oh, for fun, I have windows Vista, and I attend the latest seminars on what's new. I am using Microsoft Office 2007 and really like it. You also know I like free software or at least reasonably priced software. For example, some home users have the AVG free anti-virus, and it works great. For spy software scanning and removal, I like Spybot and Adaware, both with free and paid versions.
Many of you know I like going on to pcmag.com, download.com and cnet.com to get shareware and utility software. So what does this have to do with this week's article? Well, guess what? IBM has some free software for the masses. I am not sure if this is a response to Google giving away e-mail, word processing, mapping, picture sharing, etc., but "Big Blue" has come out with free software that really is fantastic.

Our favourite free audio player, Nullsoft Winamp is undoubtedly a classic. It supports MP3, CD, WMA, Audiosoft, Mjuice, MOD, WAV and tons of other audio formats. You can even customise your Winamp player with a variety of freeware skins. The program is easy-to-use and offers: drag and drop files, CD ripping and burning, graphic equalisers, extra plug-ins, etc. A powerful media library allows users to organise multiple playlists.A "classic" version of the program can be selected for users of slower computers. However, fans of the "old" versions of Winamp will likely select this skin purely for nostalgic purposes! The classic version of the program is stripped of advanced features, but once installed, you may switch between the classic and modern versions as you see fit.
