How To Get A Free Ringtone

August 28, 2008 |17:23 | Free Phones and Ring Tones   By : Team X

Mobile phone ringtones have become a large industry for cell phone providers. Ringtones alone account for a vast majority of the optional profits companies receive, simply because they are so popular with consumers. But getting one’s hand on free ringtones will keep their bank accounts running high, and their mobile phones just as jamming.

Oddly enough, some mobile phone companies are so strict that they won’t even allow third party content on client cell phones. North American citizens will recognize U.S. Cellular as one of the major proponents of this rule.

Although they claim it is in the best interest of the customer, most say that they actually just want all the profits of mobile phone ringtone downloads for themselves.

Free IM app works on most services

August 26, 2008 |18:07 | Free Chat Services  By : Team X

The AIM app for iPhones works pretty well -- if your friends are all on AOL's IM system. But a company called Palringo claims its new app will work with all of the major players:

Palringo integrates with several existing, popular instant messaging services: AOL's AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, Gadu Gadu, ICQ, Jabber and Windows Live Messenger. People can also use Palringo to contact their friends using iChat, Apple's instant messaging (IM) client.

I have yet to try it, but the earliest review I've seen is mostly positive.

Palringo is the true, multiservice IM application iPhone users were asking for after they were underwhelmed by the free AIM application, which only allowed users to chat with one service.

From my testing, the application freezes my iPhone every now and then, but practically all my downloaded apps are doing that anyway. We'll just have to hope the next firmware update will seal the cracks.

August 13, 2008 |17:08 | Computers & Internet  By : Team X

Proving necessity is the mother of all invention, Google’s mobile team has developed an iPhone interface for Google Translate.

Allen Hutchison, a software engineer at Google, said that while planning a holiday in Europe he was frustrated that Google Translate didn’t work well on the iPhone and teamed up with a fellow Google engineer, David Singleton, to create a new iPhone interface for the translator.

He says Google Translate for iPhone is optimised for speed, supports all existing Google Translate language pairs and uses a client-side data store on the iPhone to hang onto past translations to keep them at hand, even if not connected to the internet.

The software interface was written using the AJAX Language API.“I tried an early version of this interface out on my trip and it was great – although my pronunciation wasn't,” Hutchison said in his mobile blog.
