Watch ads and get downloads for free

Two new companies give consumers free song downloads in exchange for watching ads. FreeAllMusic.com and Guvera.com, which have contracts with independents and two major labels, require users to register and clear a waiting list.
Songs are free of copyright protections, so users don't have to sign back in to watch more ads, and can be transferred to iPods. Advertisers pay about $2 a song, so recording companies and artists get about what they earn when a song is sold on Apple's iTunes store.
